はぎ取り標本とは、地層の断面をそのまま保存した標本で、地層に接着剤を塗り、布を貼り付け、固まった後に布を地層からはがして保存処理をして作成する。
男鹿半島に分布する鮪川層は、およそ50万年前から十数万年前の地層で、おもに浅い海に積もった砂からなり、たくさんの化石を含むことから化石採集地として知られている。化石の種類は貝類をはじめウニ類、腕足類、魚類など様々で、アシカのアゴやオオツノジカの足の骨も見つかっている。
A sample strip is a sample of the cross-section of strata that has been preserved as is. Adhesive is applied to the strata after which cloth is applied. Once it has hardened, the cloth is removed from the strata creating a strip that preserves it.
Oga Peninsula's Shibikawa Formation is strata that dates several hundred-thousand to five-thousand years ago. It is mainly composed of sand that accumulated in the shallow waters of the ocean. It is known as a fossil site as it contains many fossils including shellfish, sea urchins, brachiopods, fishes, etc. The jaw bone of a sea lion and leg bone of the giant fallow deer have also been found in this formation.
