石膏は硫酸カルシウムを主成分とする鉱物で資源としても重要。非常に広く産する鉱物で、黒鉱鉱床中にも産出する。
石膏は見かけによって、透明な単一結晶の透石膏（とうせっこう、Selenite）、繊維状結晶の平行な集合体の繊維石膏（せんいせっこう、Satinspar）、細かい粒状結晶の集合体の雪花石膏（せっかせっこう）の３つの変種名がある。
Gypsum, a mineral mainly composed of calcium sulfate, is important as a natural resource. Gypsum is a very common mineral and can even be found in black ore deposits.
Depending on its outward appearance, gypsum is categorized into the three following varieties: 1. Selenite (transparent); 2. Satinspar (aggregate of fibrous crystallizations); 3. Alabaster (aggregate of fine, granulated crystallizations)
