鉱石は人間の経済活動にとって有用な資源となる鉱物、またはそれを含有する岩石のことで、銀鉱石は貴金属の銀を含有する鉱石である。
黒っぽい部分が銀が含まれるところで、他に、針銀鉱、輝銀鉱、濃紅銀鉱などの微粒を含む。
銀鉱石を精錬して純度の高い銀を得るために１６世紀頃に大陸から「灰吹法」という技術導入が図られた。
