鳥海山は秋田県の由利本荘市・にかほ市、山形県の酒田市・遊佐町にまたがる活火山で、標高2,236mの東北地方で２番目に高い山である。
鳥海山は、周囲の山々からひときわ高くそびえた独立峰で、山頂に雪が積もった姿は富士山に似ているため、出羽富士・秋田富士とも呼ばれる。
鳥海山は、60万年前から何度も噴火を繰りかえしており、画像の溶岩は1801年から1804年に噴火した際のものである。
Mt. Chokai is an active volcano that extends from Yurihonjo and Nikaho in Akita to Sakata and Yuzamachi in Yamagata Prefecture. It is the second highest mountain in the Tohoku region standing at an elevation of 2,236 m.
Mt. Chokai is an independent mountain that stands noticeably higher than other mountains surrounding it. The snow on the summit of the mountain resembles Mt. Fuji, and it also referred to as Dewa Fuji or Akita Fuji for this reason.
Mt. Chokai has repeatedly erupted numerous times over the last 600,000 years. The lava rock in this image is from eruptions from 1801-1804.
