タマキガイ科に属する二枚貝。現在の主要な生息域は北海道沿岸で、秋田周辺の海でも見られる。
男鹿半島では潟西層、鮪川層からよく産出し、画像の化石は男鹿市五里合の安田海岸の鮪川層から採取した。男鹿市脇本にも鮪川層が露出しており、こちらでも同じ化石が見つかっている。
潟西層、鮪川層は貝化石の他にも、有孔虫類、フジツボ類、ウニ類、硬骨魚類、哺乳類など様々な化石が見つかっている。
Glycymeira yessoensis is a bivalve in the family Glycymerididae.
Its main habitat is on the coast of Hokkaido, but can also be found in the waters off Akita's coast. Fossils of it are commonly found in the Katanishi Formation and Shibikawa Formation on the Oga Peninsula. The fossil in this photo was extracted from Shibikawa Formation located in the Anden coast of Iriai, Oga. The Shibikawa Formation is also exposed in Wakimoto, Oga, and the same fossils have been found there too.
In addition to shell fossils in Katanishi Formation and Shibikawa Formation, various fossils of Foraminifera, acorn barnacles (Balanomorpha), sea urchins (Echinoideas), bony fish (Osteichthyes) and mammals have also been found.
